WAYNE "BUTCH" UNGER
Wayne "Butch" Unger of Sullivan , Indiana, passed from this life on December 28th, 2019, surrounded by his family at home, into the heavenly one that he has been preaching about for the last 60 years.
Born September 24, 1942 to Morris and Ruby Unger of New Lebanon, Indiana, he attended Sullivan High School, played on the Football Team and was awarded the coveted Adam Sajko Award in 1960 by his fellow teammates.
His leadership qualities and personal faith were an example to those who knew him.
Wayne attended Lincoln Christian College in Lincoln, Illinois and graduated from there in 1964. He joined Central Africa Mission a year later and left for Rhodesia, Africa, where he served until 1973.
Upon returning to the States, he pastored the Franklin Memorial Christian Church congregation for the next 8 years, and was Senior Pastor to three congregations in California from 1987-2015.
Wayne served on the Board of Trustees for an International Mission group that worked behind the Iron Curtain under Communist rule. He was appointed Vice-President/Director of the European work based in Vienna, Austria. As part of his duties, he directed travels in and out of those 7 satellite countries, taking Bibles and supplies into the then, underground Churches, until 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann (Monroe), of 57 years, one brother, Howard M. Unger of Carlisle, two daughters, Sherrie Harmon of Bargersville , Kelly (Myron ) Julian of Sullivan, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Wayne and the family have requested private services. Burial will be at Center Ridge Cemetary, Sullivan.
Memorials from friends and loved ones may be sent to the Ladies Missionary Society at the First Christian Church of Sullivan, Indiana.
