Betty June Butts, 95, a former resident of Sullivan County, slipped safely into the eternal arms of Jesus on February 3, 2026. She began her life journey on April 4, 1930. She was one of 7 children born to Raymond and Dorothy Huffman. Her family members awaiting her arrival at Heaven’s gate were her parents; husband, Richard Butts ; son, Michael Ray Butts, along with siblings, Henry R. Huffman, Floyd W. Huffman, Gladys I. Whitchurch, Beverly J.Yates and Lucille M. Galbraith.
Those here to cherish her loving memory are her children, Jay Butts (Cherie), Ronald Butts (Jeanette) and Sandra Bigney along with a brother, William Huffman.
Betty “Mom” was an excellent cook. Her way of sharing her life was through food. Her feelings were hurt if you visited and didn’t eat something before you went home. As a special treat for us, on our birthdays we got to pick whatever we wanted for supper. We really thought this was a big deal- we got to choose for the whole family! Years later, she loved to make big family meals and have her adult kids come to supper.
While I can not back this with Scripture, I strongly suspect one of the cooks for the marriage supper of the Lamb will be, our sweet Mom.
Mom had a beautiful voice. She sang alto and could harmonize and make anybody sound good. When she was a girl, she and her sister sang on the Sunshine Hour (a christian radio program) while their Dad backed them on the guitar. Mom grew up during the depression and knew hard times. IN 1948 she was elected Senior Prom Queen of Staunton High School. This was quite an honor since it was the same as today's Homecoming Queen. When Sandy was in third grade she started working full-time at Quaker Maid. Dad was off work for a year and a half with major health issues. She worked so hard and still managed to take good care of us.
Mom was so kind and generous and had such a tender heart. We always had pets and never had commercial food for them. They ate what we ate - if there was any left over, and she always made sure there was. Once the table was cleared of dishes and Dad, she would make a huge pan of gravy and crumble up some bread in it. Then dinner was served to our fur babies. She had such a good sense of humor. When she got together with her sisters, they would laugh and cut up like school girls.
Mom loved Jesus from the time she was a little girl. Her Bible was always on the table by her chair and was never in mint condition. So many verses were underlined with notes in the margin where Scripture had really touched and helped her. It’s such a comfort to know she is in her Heavenly home, enjoying the mansion Jesus has made for just her. To the very end of her life on this earth she stayed faithful to the Lord. She could truly say-
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7
