Carolyn "Sue" McDonnall, aged 87, passed away peacefully at her home in Sullivan, Indiana, on Friday, August 9 , 2024 while surrounded by her family. Sue was born on January 29, 1937, in Sullivan.
Sue graduated from Sullivan High School in 1955 and, soon after her graduation, married her high school sweetheart, George Edwin "Eddie" McDonnall. Eddie joined the Air Force and was stationed in Vallejo, California. Sue went to join her husband after their first child, John, was born. Sue gave birth to their second child, Melinda, while in California. She loved to tell her family of the cross-country journey to California with her parents and infant son, and then the return drive back to Indiana with her husband and two small children.
Soon after Sue and Eddie returned to Sullivan, they purchased the farmhouse where Sue would live until her passing. Their third child, Leslie, was born in Sullivan. Sue thrived as a farmer's wife and loved raising her three children on the farm. She loved to cook, and her noodles and pies were legendary among her family and friends. Sue was also an avid gardener and seamstress. She sewed her daughter's prom dresses and bridesmaids' dresses for their weddings and was the family's tailor for decades.
In addition to preparing and sharing many meals with her family, Sue shared her love of games especially bunco, yahtzee and canasta with all of her children and grandchildren. There were many competitive canasta tournaments at the dining table after another huge family meal. She was always happy to play a card or board game with her grandchildren, who she often cared for as they were growing up.
Sue was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church with her husband Eddie. She attended Sunday School and church services there on a regular basis with life-long friends. In addition to going to church, she lived a life of meaningful acts of love and service, as Christ has instructed.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Estella Wolfe, and her brother, Norman Wolfe.
She is survived by, her Loving husband Eddie; son, John McDonnall (Hollie), daughters, Melinda Phegley (Donnie) and Leslie Koenig (Bub); grandchildren, Josh Phegley, Jordan Phegley (Britney), Ali Renes (Michael) Jonathan Phegley (Kelli), John Dylan McDonnall and Cade Koenig (Cat); and her great- grandchildren Brylee Phegley, Riley McDonnall, Noah Phegley, Isaac Phegley, Edwin Renes and Charles Renes.
Sue loved her family dearly. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Sue touched the lives of so many people. She will truly be missed and will never be forgotten.
