Charles A Smith

Charles Arthur Smith, 68, Terre Haute, and formerly of Sullivan, passed away at 2:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2016. He was surrounded by his family. Charles was born to Charles Leon Smith and Mary Rine Smith, on September 22, 1948. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle.

Charles was a 1967 graduate of Sullivan High School, a 1969 graduate of Sam's Tech, and a 2004 graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University where he earned a degree in management. After 32 years, Charles retired from GE Unison formerly Tri Industries in 2012. In addition, Charles spent 19 years on the Sullivan and North Central basketball courts as a referee. Charles was also a member of the Sullivan First Christian Church where he served as a deacon, a member of Maryland Community Church, Sullivan Elks Lodge, Riley Conservation Club, and was a proud Army and Marine Reservist.

Charles's devotion to his family and friends was apparent to all who knew him. He could be found watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, visiting and helping his neighbors, or playing golf with his friends. His love and devotion to his family was never more obvious than the day and night care he provided for his son, Chad, as he fought ALS.

Charles is survived by his parents; his wife, Robin Smith; one daughter, Tracy Greggs; one son-in-law, Darin Greggs; two granddaughters, Emily and Sydney Greggs; one grandson, Daniel Smith; one brother, Larry (Linda) Smith, and nieces and nephews. Charles was predeceased by his son, Chad Alan.

A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016, at First Christian Church in Sullivan, with Pastor Vince McFarland officiating. Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday. The graveside service will follow at Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan. Holmes Memorial Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.
