Darhis Arlette (Dougherty) Elmore

July 22, 1929 — February 24, 2025

Sullivan

Darhis Arlette Dougherty Elmore, 95, of Sullivan, Indiana and formally, Terre Haute, Indiana, was welcomed into heaven, her eternal home on Monday, February 24, 2025. Darhis was born July 22, 1929 to Glenn Simmons Doughtery, and Gilbert Green Doughtery. After attending elementary school in Sullivan, her family relocated to Terre Haute. She completed her schooling in Vigo County. Darhis graduated from Wiley High School, class of 1946.

After graduation, Darhis attended Indiana State Teachers College and the Academy of Art Institute in Chicago. She then brought her artistic talents back to Terre Haute working for Pollyea Advertising where she created the original pen and ink logo for Clabber Girl, as well as the artwork for Champagne Velvet, and Cook's Beer. On November 25, 1951, Darhis married the love of her life. Morris "Jack" Elmore. They immediately headed to South Carolina for Jack to finish his commitment as a sailor in the United States Navy. When his duty concluded, they returned to Indiana and settled in Sullivan. Together, they had two sons, John Simmons Elmore, and Brian Johnson Elmore.

They lived a life full of adventure, beauty, and devotion for over 42 years before Jack passed away, February 8, 1994. Darhis was involved in numerous organizations throughout her life including Art Guild, Tri Kappa, and the Missionary Unit at the Sullivan First Christian Church. She also enjoyed golfing in the women's league, and camping. She and Jack traveled all over the United States with their camper in tow. Darhis never let her passion for art cease, as she created many unique, and personalized pieces for loved ones throughout her life. She took numerous art classes, and collected several art pieces as well. Darhis was also the bookkeeper, and secretary for Elmore Oil Company, which she and her husband owned until 1989.

While Darhis was always very involved in the community, nothing was more important to her than her job at home; she was a loving and devoted housewife to her precious family. She was immensely proud of her sons, and absolutely adored her grandchildren. She made many trips to gymnastic, track, soccer, football, basketball and dance practices and performances. She will be remembered for always putting the needs of others before her own, having a home cooked meal on the table at 6:00 pm every night, her chicken and dumplings, bright red lipstick, impeccable accounting skills, the saying A" place for everything and everything in its place", and above all else, her loving and generous heart. She was a genuine friend to all. Simply put, she was the epitome of class.

Darhis is preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Gilbert Doughtery, her father-in-law, Red Elmore, mother-in-law, Dot Elmore, her husband, Morris "Jack" Elmore, and son, John Simmons Elmore.

She is survived by son, Brian Johnson Elmore and his wife Beth.
