Sullivan,
Donald Willis McMahan, 84, Sullivan IN passed away peacefully on Jan. 28, 2024 at Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus in Terre Haute, IN. Donald was born in Sullivan on June 10, 1939 to Walter and Maud Farrand McMahan. He was married on July 22, 1967 to Martha Jean Smith, who survives. Don was a graduate of the 1957 class at Sullivan High School. Following high school, he joined the Carpenter’s Local 133 and was a proud union member for 67 years. In addition to working through the union, Donald also did carpentry jobs in homes throughout Sullivan and the surrounding communities. These jobs were most often as much a social call as they were for employment.
Donald took watercolor painting classes later in life and spent many years in his “art loft” at home and was a member of the Sullivan County Art Guild. He was a former Jaycee and was a member of theSullivan Elks Lodge 911. Donald was a longtime member of the Sullivan Board of the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission. Donald was also a member of the Sullivan First Christian Church, where he had been a deacon and 2nd grade Sunday School teacher. He taught enough years to see several children of his earlier students attend his classes as well. He loved teaching the children about the Bible and Jesus and took great pride in the fact that he had read the Bible 19 times, cover to cover.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, his son Bretton Donald and infant son Kenneth Matthew. He also was preceded by brothers Melvin, Walter Jr., Mervin and Maurice and sisters Norma Graham, Lois Brown, Naomi Huff, Wilma Spencer and Doris Cox.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Jean, sons Bradley Edward and Joshua David (Micki). He was also a grandpa to Breanna McMahan, Benjamin McMahan and Peyton McMahan and a great grandpa to D.J. Lalen and Trista Anderson. Donald loved all babies, but his great-great grandchildren Everlee and Koen brought tremendous joy. He is also survived by his former daughters-in-law Debbie Harrah and Margaret McMahan, which both had a forever place in his heart. Donald also leaves behind siblings Charles, Janice Wright (Buck) and sister-in-law Sally McMahan. Special sister-in-law Ann Smith survives and she brought happiness to Donald when visiting from Mississippi and chatting into the night around the kitchen table.
The family of Donald would like to thank the staff at Sullivan County Community Hospital and Cobblestone Crossings for providing the most in professional and compassionate care during his timespent in those facilities. It was truly appreciated and we are extremely grateful.
