Edward J Volk

Edward Joseph Volk Jr. 91 (formerly of Sullivan) passed away in his sleep with his family beside him on Saturday. November 5th at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Edward was born July 2nd, 1925 in Minonk, Illinois to Edward Peter and Bernice Ann Volk. He was preceded in death by his brother Gene Volk (Sullivan) and his wife Barbara Norman Volk (Sullivan). Surviving relatives include his brother James Volk (Maitland, Florida) daughter Karen Adgate (Patrick) Ionia, Michigan, son Paul Volk, Valparaiso, Indiana, nieces Cathy (Bob) Roberts, Sullivan, Cynthia (Mike) Christie, Dover, New Hampshire, Jennifer Akers, Longwood, Florida, nephew Christopher (Shirley) Volk, great nieces Sophia and Liese Volk(Christopher ) Chicago and several cousins.

"June" or "JR" as most of his friends knew him, graduated as president of his senior class at New Lebanon High School in 1943. He was employed at the New Lebanon grain elevator where he worked and orchestrated a metal fund drive during WWII. He then worked on the Illinois Central Railroad for 43 years as a section laborer. While still living on his family farm in the early 1960's, Ed developed histoplasmosis and was hospitalized for several months at St. Anthony's Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. While there, he met a very caring and compassionate nurse that tended to his full recovery. After being discharged from the hospital, Edward asked this young nurse out and she accepted. They were married on December 29. 1962 and spent 38 wonderful years together raising their two children in Sullivan. Edward enjoyed his family, friends, gardening, fishing, feeding the birds and squirrels, and chasing trains with his son. One of the things that he enjoyed towards the end of his life was writing and receiving letters from his family and friends. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and saw they won the World Series before his passing.

Funeral arrangements will be held at Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan, Indiana on Wednesday, November 9th from 10 a.m. to 12:00 with the service beginning at noon. Burial will take place at Center Ridge Cemetery immediately after the service. A luncheon will follow the grave side service for friends and family at the Westside Church of Christ on Hwy 41 in Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made out to the family who will distribute them to the many agencies involved with Edward in the recent months. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
