He was also very active in FFA and received the 1956 FAA Star Farmer Award and traveled to Denver, Colorado to be honored with the FFA American Farmer Degree.
He graduated from Purdue University’s Agriculture Course and then returned to Carlisle to farm. Emil received the 1980 Conservation Farmer of the year, the 1984 Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year and the Jaycees Outstanding Farmer Award.

Emil was a member and deacon of Sullivan First Christian Church. He was also a 50 year member of Odd Fellows Lodge and the Scottish Rite, and was a 32 Degree Mason.
In his younger years he was an avid tractor-puller, had a fast 61 Chevy that won races at the Terre Haute Drag Strip, coached girls softball with his wife, and played on a basketball league until his late 50’s.
He never met a stranger and enjoyed being with his family and friends, golfing, going to the Apple Club, playing cards, and giving away corn, tomatoes, and carmels. He loved farming with Janet, Cullen, and his crew and living in Sullivan County. Four days prior to his passing he hit a hole-in-one; most definitely with a little help from God.
