Gregory C. Bender, born September 9, 1963, in Frankfort, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. Greg lived a life defined by his deep love for others, his strong sense of duty, and his remarkable ability to bring people together.
Greg was raised in a close-knit family and in a small town. He was the beloved son of Jerry and Lotte (Carey) Bender, whose values shaped the compassionate and principled man he became. From an early age, he demonstrated a commitment to service, integrity, and community—qualities that remained at the heart of who he was throughout his life.
After graduating from Sullivan High School in 1982, Greg proudly answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. His time in the military instilled in him a lasting sense of discipline, honor, and pride. He later continued his service to his nation through his work with the National Security Agency, a role he carried out with deep responsibility and dedication.
Faith was a guiding force in Greg’s life. As an active member of First Christian Church in his early years, he found strength and purpose in his beliefs and shared that same hope and encouragement with those around him.
Greg had an infectious zest for life and a gift for forming lasting relationships. He was a loyal friend, a passionate sports enthusiast, avid golfer, and someone who embraced both competition and camaraderie. Whether on the golf course, in the gym, or reminiscing about his days as a standout high school athlete, Greg found joy in staying active and engaged. He loved the Chicago Cubs, IU sports, FOX News, watching golf, and listening to all genres of music.
Above all else, Greg cherished his family. He was a loving brother, and his children and grandchildren were the center of his world. He took immense pride in supporting them, celebrating their achievements, and simply spending time together. The love he gave so freely will continue to live on in them.
He is survived by his loving family: his son, Jared (Kelly) Bender; his daughters, Jaden (David) Dinerman, and Juno Bender; his brother, Michael (Marie) Bender; his sisters, Cherylin (Todd) Umphries, Andrea Wood, and Jacque (Tammy Persinger) Bender. He was a proud and adoring grandfather to Jonathan, Elias, Caleb Dinerman, and Julie Bender, each of whom carries forward his legacy of kindness, strength, and joy.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Lotte Bender, and his son Jordan Bender. Though their absence was deeply felt, Greg honored their memory through the love he gave and the life he lived.
Greg will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the love he gave, the lives he touched, and the legacy he leaves behind.
The Bender family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all who have offered love, support, and prayers during this difficult time. Your kindness, comforting words, and shared memories have meant more than can be expressed. We are truly grateful to everyone who has helped honor Greg’s life and legacy, and who continues to surround our family with compassion and care.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Greg’s life on July 11, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Holmes Memorial Chapel 642 W Silver St, Sullivan, Indiana. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM, with burial service at Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, IN. Following the burial service, loved ones are invited to share memories and fellowship at First Christian Church, 105 N Broad St. Sullivan, IN. Refreshments will be provided.
Due to the expected hot temperatures, we want everyone to be comfortable so please note that casual dress is fine. Please feel free to wear Greg’s favorite sports Chicago Cubs, IU, or golf attire.
