Guy S. Hammond, 86, died April 23, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital of Indianapolis surrounded by his loving wife and daughters. He leaves his wife of 36 years, Carol (Tucker) Hammond, his daughter Kelly Hammond and her partner Amber Patterson, his daughter Kristina (Hammond) O'Connor and her husband Justin, his new granddaughter Katherine Rose O'Connor, and two grandsons, Jason Hammond-Wood and fiancée Heather Reiniger, and Nathaniel Padgett and wife Sophie. He is also survived by one brother, Zeddie Hammond, daughter Lynn Padgett and husband Jack, son Clark Hammond, several nieces and nephews, and many close and beloved friends. He was born December 8, 1928 in Martinsville, Illinois to his parents Clark Alanson Hammond and Anna (Tomlinson) Hammond. He was the youngest of eight siblings, and is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and four brothers. Guy's biggest passion in life was his family, and a close second was his love of flying. He first became a pilot on September 10th, 1948 in Greenville, South Carolina while serving in the Air Force. He owned 21 airplanes throughout his 67 years of flying, and was the oldest pilot at the Sullivan Airport. He also had a passion for fast cars, motorcycles, jet skis, and four-wheelers, and over the past few years has enjoyed exploring the countryside with his wife on his bright red Honda trike. Guy served in the Air Force for 6 years, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He owned a garage in Farmersburg, Indiana for 40 years, served as manager of the Sullivan County Airport for 7 years, and retired (briefly) before being ‘drafted' as Registrar and eventually Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Sullivan County Health Department until his death. Guy was a member of several organizations, including the local chapter of EAA, AOPA, American Legion, and Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute where was was a 32nd degree. He served on the Sheriff's Merit Board and Sullivan Aviation Board for many years. He belonged to the Indiana Association of Vital Records Registrars. Guy was a Mason and served as Master of the Farmersburg Lodge. He was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sullivan, Indiana. Services will be held on Thursday April 30, 2015 at 12:00PM at St. Mary's Catholic Church. There will be a visitation prior to the service from 10:00AM-12:00PM at the church. Holmes Memorial Chapel has assisted the family with arrangements. Guy believed strongly in organ donation, and would encourage friends and family to become organ donors as well. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sullivan County Humane Society, Our Father's Arms, or Catholic charities.
