Joan Godfrey Smith

Joan Godfrey Smith, 83, of Sullivan passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Breckenridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Sullivan County on January 13, 1931 to Earl and Roberta (Holtzclaw) Godfrey Eaton. Joan was a 1949 graduate of Sullivan High School, a member of the Sullivan First Christian Church, and a social worker here in Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parent's two brothers, Ted Godfrey and Jack Godfrey, her husband Gale H. Smith in 1993, and her son G. Patrick Smith in 2005. Survivors include her son Mike and his wife Rita Smith of Sullivan, daughter Julie and her husband Bruce Walkup of Sullivan, ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Services for Joan will be 6:00 p.m. on Friday August 29, 2014 at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dale Wise officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services. The family suggests that, if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Sullivan County Humane Shelter, envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Private burial will take place at Center Ridge Cemetery.
