Joe Amos Sluder, 87, of Sullivan, IN. passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was a gift to Jesus on Christmas Day. He was born in Sullivan County on August 29, 1926 to John and Beatrice Brummett Sluder. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill and Basil Sluder, and a sister Gwen Tomey. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving on the USS Hamblen from 1945 to 1949. Joe served as Fire Chief for Sullivan under Herman Smith and Bill Donnelly. He drove a school bus for Southwest School Corp. for many years, Commander of the American Legion, member of Civitan Club, supervisor of security at Hoosier Energy, a coal miner, a security guard at Sullivan Park and Lake, a mechanic, and worked at Hecklang Plumbing. Survivors include his wife Shirley Rose Jennings Sluder who he married November 10, 1990. Sons Mike Sluder (wife Jenny) of Owensville, IN., Doug Sluder and (wife Debbie) of Sullivan, and daughters Debbie Tennyson (husband Jerry) and Rita Sluder both of Sullivan. Grandchildren Kimberly Sullivan and Darrin, Katie Weber, Travis, Kristi, Irwin, and Andy, Chad Sluder, Colleen Overton and Robin, Ashley Hayes and Matt, Justin Sluder, and Jason Ogle. Twelve great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. A stepson Steven Wayne Jennings and wife Donna, step grandson Brian Jennings and two step-grandsons. A special nephew and neice Auggie and JoAnn Martin. Visitation will be Friday, December 27, 2013 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Holmes Memorial Chapel. Services will be Saturday at 10:00am with Pastor Jerry Adams officiating. Interment will follow in Center Ridge Cemetery.
