Lawrence E. Hays,
It is with great sadness that we share Larry's peaceful passing on Wednesday morning, June 3, 2026, at The Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care, Hospice of theWabash Valley, surrounded by his loving family.
Larry was born February 22, 1950, in Greene County to Rusty and Margie Hoffman Hays.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Edward “Eddie” Hays; sister Joy Roberts.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet Hankins Hays; daughter Carmen(and Tom) Gofourth, Sullivan; son Craig Hays, Indianapolis; his 3 granddaughters Kennedy (fiancé Hayden Sater), Korinne, and Kaycee Gofourth; sister-in-law Connie Hays; brother-in-law Bob Roberts; he also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
His growing-up years were spent in Indianapolis before mine work brought his family to Sullivan.
Larry graduated with the class of 1968 from Sullivan High School. He attended Indiana University, served with the Army in Vietnam, and was married on January 1, 1972.
Larry’s career involved local and regional banking and real estate, and over the years created and helmed several businesses to meet the needs of the community. H & H Realty, Hays and Associates, and Brown Abstract and Title Company.
Larry’s love of sports was a continuous thread throughout his life that created so many memories.
Playing those typical sports for boys growing up during the 50’s and 60’s; football, basketball, and baseball, led to coaching or helping with his son’s and daughter’s league sport teams.
After his children grew out of organized sports activities, he began to referee to keep involved. This then led to teaming up with his good buddy, John Montgomery, on his radio station, WNDI, to broadcast local sports teams’ games.
And when his three granddaughters came along, nothing made him happier than to be back in a gym bleacher, ballfield, or sports facility to watch them in their myriad of sports activities.
And of course, following his favorite Indiana sports teams: IU, Indiana State, and the Colts.
Upon retirement, he and Janet spent many happy years splitting time between Sullivan and their Singer Island beach home in Florida hosting family and friends, and becoming season ticket holders for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training games.
The family is respecting Larry’s wishes for a simple send-off by continuing with his and our favorite activities that always include good food, lighting up the grill when the season allows, along with plenty of laughter. Nothing made him happier!
For those wishing to honor Larry’s memory, may we suggest considering: Hospice of the Wabash Valley (The Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care); the Wabash Valley Community Foundation (Sullivan County); Our Father’s Arms; or a charity of your choosing.
Holmes Memorial Chapel and staff were honored to assist the family with arrangements.
