Marion Allen “Al” Mason passed from this life on Monday, February 17, 2025 at Gibson Family Center. He was born to Gilbert and Almeda Taft Mason on February 16, 1949 in Sullivan County. Al was a member of the 1967 graduating class of North Central High School. After graduation he proudly served his Country in the United States Air Force.
He married his soul mate, Phyllis Crooks August 4, 1967 and they lovingly raised their children and adored their 6 grandchildren, until her passing in 2014. After his service to his country he was employed with Amax Coal Company at the Keensburg Mine, where he was a long time dedicated coal-miner.
Along with his family and career he was active in his community. He enjoyed coaching softball for 40 years. Dedicating many hours on the field teaching numerous players over the years. Nothing was as important to him as his family. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren with endless devotion. He loved a good game of poker, The Rolling Stones, watching IU sports, baby back ribs and sweet treats. His sense of humor and devotion will be deeply missed by those who loved him.
Al was a true “American Badass”
Al is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Gilbert Jr. and Billy. His wife Phyllis, a son Troy and his fur baby Maddy.
He is survived by his daughter, Tori Mason; granddaughters, Sydney, Haley, Morgan, Rylee, Tayler, and Alexis; siblings, Sheila, Carol and Joe; great-grandchildren, Blaine, Henry, Bo, Millie and M.J.
A celebration of Al’s life will be Thursday, February 20, 2025 at the Shelburn American Legion Post #139 from 2-5 pm. The family requests that if you so wish, donations be made in Al’s memory to the Shelburn Youth League. Envelopes will be available at the celebration.
The family would like to acknowledge The Gibson Family Center Hospice, and nurses at Union Hospital for the loving care and compassion they shared with the family.
Holmes Memorial Chapel and staff were honored to assist the family with arrangements.
