Melvin Eugene Shipley

October 24, 1928 — March 7, 2017

Melvin Eugene Shipley, 88, of Carlisle passed away on Tuesday March 7, 2017 at Oak Village Nursing Home in Oaktown. He was born in Vincennes, on October 24, 1928, to William Oval and Stella (Beaman) Shipley. Melvin was a self-employed carpenter by trade, a Navy veteran of the Korean and WWII, NRA Life Member, Admiral Nimitz Association Life Member, and US Navy Cruiser Sailors Association. Melvin attended Temple Baptist Church in Carlisle; family meant everything to him, he lived life to the fullest and loved nature. Preceding him in death are his parents, brothers Leroy and his wife Vivian, Virgil and Glen.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Mildred Lucille (Burns) Shipley whom he married on September 19, 1954; sons John (Deidra) Shipley of Carlisle, Jim (Lynn) Shipley of Carlisle, a daughter Judy (David) Powers of Linton, sister in-laws Donna and Mildred Shipley, six grandchildren Michelle (Patrick) Lawrence, Kyra (Tyler) Vajentic, Samantha Shipley, Heather Shipley, Travis (Alexis) Shipley, Derrick (Mikaela) Shipley, great grandchildren Dominick and Alexander Vajentic, Journey, Jenna, Ryleigh Lawrence, Bryar , Bryonna and John Wayne Shipley.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday March 10, 2017 at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brad West officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday 4-8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Military honors will be given by the Hymera, Shelburn, Sullivan American Legions and the Sullivan VFW
