Merton Hubbard Wheeler

June 22, 1917 — December 3, 2018

Merton Hubbard Wheeler II died quietly December 3, 2018, at the Shakamak Retirement Community in Jasonville at the age of 101.

He was born June, 22, 1917, in Saginaw, MI, to Merton Hubbard and Ula Louise (Van Horn) Wheeler.

On May 5, 1945, he married Mildred Ruth Annis in Hymera. They were married for 61 years.

A veteran of the US Army Air Corp and the Air Force, he served in World War II in the China-Burma-India theatre and served stateside during the Korean War. Merton was an industrial engineer who worked for 14 years at General Electric in Linton and retired from J I Case in Terre Haute. After retirement he did consulting work for Cummins Engines and Consolidated Diesel, installing computerized, robotic paint systems.

Active in many community groups, he was a member of Hymera Baptist Church; VFW Post 972, Terre Haute; American Legion Post 298, Eastern Star Chapter 289, Masonic Lodge #588, Hymera; Scottish Rite, Valley of Terre Haute; Institute of Industrial Engineer; CBI Veterans Association; Ruritan National.

He was proceeded in death by his parents; a sister, Phebe Louise Wheeler; a brother, Daniel Dorsey Wheeler; his wife, and a son, James Robert Wheeler. He is survived by his son, Jack Edward Wheeler; nephews Mike and Mark Julian, Daniel and Stanley Wheeler; nieces, Emily and Martha Wheeler.

Memorial gifts may be made to Hymera Baptist Church or Southern Care Hospice.

Holmes Memorial Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 8, 2018, with service to follow at 1:00 pm. Burial will be at K of P Cemetery, Hymera, following the service.
