Bernard K. "Boots" Horton, 85, of Carlisle died at 9:00 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2005 in his residence. He was born August 3, 1919 in Terre Haute to C. Floyd and Anna Irene Evinger Horton. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Carlisle First United Methodist Church and served over four year in the U.S. Army during WWII, two of which were in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. and served on the board of directors of the Sullivan County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Sullivan County Soil and Water conservation and was awarded the 1979 Conservation Farmer of the Year. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Producers Livestock Marketing Association, the Carlisle American Legion, the Sullivan County Extension Committee and received a distinguished service award in recognition of Valuable Contributions to American Agriculture. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Norman F. Horton.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Mary Ann Ready Horton of Carlisle whom he married May 17, 1947, two sons Tim Horton and his wife Carmen of Vincennes and Curtis Horton and his wife Jackie of Carlisle, three daughters Brenda Horton Prediger and her husband Jay of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Nyna Horton de Villar and her husband Carl of Carlisle and Anna Horton Mauck and her husband Dan of Pleasant Prairie, WI., three sisters Phyllis Giordano of Lafayette, Doris Wildman of Carlisle and Shirley Wilson of Oaktown, thirteen grandchildren Christy Prediger, Matthew Prediger, Patrick Prediger, Clint Pinkston, Clay Pinkston, Brandi Horton, Tanner Horton, Kaylissa Horton, Amber Horton, Lyndze Horton, Tori Mauck, C.J. de Villar and Janine Bozeman and other relatives.
Services were at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2005 in the Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan. Rev. Marilyn Couger officiated. Burial with military rites by the Sullivan and Shelburn American Legions was in the Carlisle Odd Fellows Cemetery. Pallbearers were Randy Horton, Brad Hoke, Greg Hoke, Don Hoke, Bill Ready and Chris Halbig. Music was provided by Walter and Denise Hoke.
