Billy Durance Stines, 57, of Shelburn died at 9:32 a.m. Thursday, January 27, 2005 in the Sullivan County Community Hospital . He was born March 16, 1947 in Sullivan to Durance Stines and Elsie Pirtle Stines. He worked as a security officer at Indiana State University and fourteen years at the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He was a 1965 graduate of Hymera High School , a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Cheryl Darlene Hunter Stines of Shelburn whom he married June 2, 1965; three sons Billy Stines, Jr., of Hymera, Brett Stines and Brian Stines both of Logansport, one daughter Kimberly Smith and her husband Jeff of Carlisle, one step son Troy Cowden of Hymera, two sisters Carol Harris of Pimento and Connie Alumbaugh of Hymera, nine grandchildren, Jessica Wright, Bethany Wright, Timothy Stines, Elisha Stines, Cody Smith, Billy Stines, III., Josie Stines, Huston Cowden and Jayden Cowden, two great grandchildren Gavyn Wright and the light of his life Gabriella Wright and other relatives. We will forever remember you Pappy, thanks for everything. Love from the "Hole in the wall Gang".
Private graveside services were at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 29, 2005 at the K of P Cemetery in Hymera. Rev. James Quick officiated. The Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions conducted military graveside rites. Holmes Memorial Chapel, Sullivan, was in charge of arrangements
