Paul Eugene Watson, 83, of Merom died at 2:20 a.m. Friday, November 11, 2005 in the I.U. Medical Center in Indianapolis . He was born August 31, 1922 in Graysville to William Watson and Maude Mahan Watson. He was a retired Emeritus Professor of International Development Education and Educational Policy Studies at the University of Pittsburgh . He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII having served in the Army Air Corps 9th Air Force in the European Theater for three years and recently served on the Board of Directors of the Turman Township Youth Foundation. He was graduated from Graysville School , the Indiana State College and Columbia University . After public school teaching and administrative service at Indianola and Hutsonville , IL he was with the Oregon State System of Higher Education as an associate professor and director of the Portland Center for Continuing Higher Education from 1958 to 1963. At Pittsburgh he served as co-director of the University Center for International Studies from 1968 until his retirement in 1985. He was a founding father of the Pennsylvania Council for International Education and chaired the state wide committee that created the Pennsylvania Governor's High School of International Studies . He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Ruth Martin Watson, his parents, four brothers Ural Watson, Ralph Watson, Gaylord Watson and Carlos Watson and one sister Josephine Watson.
Survivors include his wife Carole Smith Watson of Merom, one son Steven Martin Watson and his wife Maria Elena of Cincinnati, one daughter Lynne Watson of Terre Haute, two step sons Shawn Smith of Pittsburgh and Robert Smith of New Hampshire, eleven grandchildren; Kirsten Watson, Shannen Watson, Erek Watson, Amber Watson, Esteban Chiriboga, Adriana Chiriboga, Janice Smith, Peter Smith, Jennie Smith, Jesse Smith and Joelle Smith and other relatives.
He was a member of the University of Pittsburgh Faculties in Ecuador from 1963-1966 and continued to served as consultant to the U.S. and foreign governments and institutions for educational matters in several Latin American, Asian and African countries throughout his career at Pittsburgh.
Services were at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at the Holmes Memorial Chapel. Rev. David Cox officiated. Burial with military graveside rites by the Sullivan and Shelburn American Legion Posts was in the Johnson Cemetery near Graysville. Pallbearers were Shawn Smith, Rob Smith, Bob Watson, Bill Watson, Esteban Chiriboga and Joe Gunalda.
