Vernon Ray "Vern" Reed, 57, of Sullivan died at 8:53 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2007 at the Sullivan County Community Hospital. The 1969 graduate of Garfield High School was born July 12, 1950 in Terre Haute to Floyd Reed and Jean Whitledge Reed. He was the CEO at the Open Arms Christian Ministries, a member of the Sullivan First Christian Church and a US Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Indiana Youth Investment Award in 2005 by the Indiana Youth Institute and received the Governors Award for Service and Volunteerism in the Faith Based Category. He was a board member of the Indiana Adult Continuing Education Association, a member of the Child welfare League of America and a member of the IARCCA. He was preceded in death by one daughter Jennifer Lin Reed, his father and one sister Nancee Hiatt.
Survivors include his wife of twenty one years Carol Anne Hutton Reed of Sullivan whom he married May 28, 1986, one son Caleb Glenn Reed of Sullivan, one daughter Cortney Jean Reed of Sullivan, his mother of Terre Haute, one brother Scott Reed of Brighton, MI, three sisters Nikki Robinson, Terri Schimmel and Kristi Turner all of Terre Haute, one grand child Braylin Rae Adams and other relatives.
Services were 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 4, 2006 at the Sullivan First Christian Church. Rev. Dale Wise officiated. Burial was in the Center Ridge Cemetery with military rites by the Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and the Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars.
