Norman R. "Cotty" Bays, 82, of Farmersburg died at 12:13 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2007 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. The 1943 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School was born August 8, 1925 in Terre haute to William Bays and Irene Barr Bays. He served in the US Navy during WWII and attended the Indiana State Teachers College. He was a farmer and work at the US Penitentiary in Terre Haute as a meat processor foreman. He retired from the Con Rail Railroad in 1991. He was a member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute and the United Transportation Union. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers William Bays and Francis Bays.
Survivors include his wife of sixty one years Mary J. Pearman Bays of Farmersburg whom he married July 5, 1946, two daughters Mary Lou Chapman of Sullivan and Sally Smith of Saginaw, MI, one son Bill Bays of Shelburn, six grandchildren Erin Smith, Sara Ingram, Amy Smith, Bobbie Jo Cullison, Caleb Bays and Cody Bays, two great grandchildren Halee Snow and Jaylee Snow, four nephews he raised Richard, David, Christopher and Mark Greenwell and other relatives.
Services were at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Emanuel Apostolic Church in Hymera with Rev. James Quick officiated. Burial with military graveside rites by the Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and the Sullivan VFW were in the Sugar Grove Cemetery, north of Hymera. Masonic Services were at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2007.
