Pearl Shorter, 92, of New Lebanon died at 3:30 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2008 in Miller's Merry Manor. The 1935 graduate of Woodbine High School was born December 11, 1915 in Kettle Island, KY to Robert Bowman and Ibby Reese Bowman. She was a member of the New Lebanon United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for over fifty years. She was U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, a fifty year member, past worthy matron and Grand Representative of the Merom Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George Shorter and one granddaughter Teresa Wagoner Coats.
Survivors include one son Kenneth Shorter of Watertown, NY, two daughters Judy Smith and husband Steve of Terre Haute and Joyce Wagoner and husband Truman of Odessa, TX, seven grandchildren Tracie Nicks, McCallin, TX; Tralaina Franklin, Odessa, TX; Chad Smith, Plainfield; Kimberly Bray, Terre Haute; Heather Tomeo, Avon; Kendra Shorter, Indianapolis and Evan Shorter, Watertown, NY, fourteen great grandchildren and other relatives.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the New Lebanon United Methodist Church with Rev. Barbara Allen officiating. Burial with military graveside rites by the Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and the Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, New Lebanon. Pallbearers are Jim Shorter, Sam Shorter, Gary Shorter, Gig Plott, Chuck Shorter, Rex Shorter, Mickey Shorter and Brent Thompson. Visitation is 4-8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Holmes Memorial Chapel, Sullivan with Eastern Star services at 7:00 p.m. Those who wish may make donations to the New Lebanon United Methodist Church.
