John Richard "Dick" Monk, 80, of Sullivan and formerly of Graysville died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Clay County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Brazil. The 1946 graduate of Graysville High School was born September 7, 1927 in Graysville to Golden Monk and Ada Fern Bennett Monk. He was a retired electrician for the Central Illinois Power and Light Company. He was a member of the Kingsley United Methodist Church, a former board member of the Southwest School Corporation, a former Sullivan County Commissioner of District #1 and member of the Carlisle Masonic Lodge #3 F & AM. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of fifty eight years Joyce Murdock Monk of Sullivan whom he married September 3, 1949, one son Leslie Monk and his wife Shannon of Sullivan, one daughter Marsha Monk Kennedy and her husband Richard of Sullivan, eight grandchildren Jason Gettinger, Casey Gettinger, Cody Gettinger, Christian Monk, Taylor Monk, Conner Monk, Katelynn Kennedy and Marcy Zunk, four great grandchildren Jaci Gettinger, Sherry Gettinger, Meryl Zunk and Shian Douhtery and other relatives.
Services were at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008 at the Holmes Memorial Chapel Silver St. @ US 41 Sullivan. Rev. Don Ransford officiated. Burial will be in the Center Ridge Cemetery. Music was provided by Rudy and Nancy Nichols. Pallbearers were Jason Gettinger, Casey Gettinger, Cody Gettinger, Richard Kennedy, Dale Phegley and Dave Pirtle.
