Joseph Clarence Morris, 84, of Sullivan passed away at 7:41 p.m. Sunday, September 13, 2009 at the Sullivan County Community Hospital. The U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War was born October 27, 1924 in Sullivan to Joseph Morris and Maggie Whitfield Morris. He was a member of the St. Paul's Baptist Church, Terre Haute, the Sullivan American Legion and the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and three grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife fifty-four years Mary Deloris Taylor Morris of Sullivan whom he married April 13, 1955, one son Charles Morris, St. Louis, five daughters Fannie Mae Howard, Youngstown, OH, Tereasa Flowers, Belleview, IL, Bettie McCargo, Belinda Whitlock and Deloris Campbell all of Terre Haute, one sister Betty Batton, Terre Haute, seventeen grandchildren, several great grandchildren and other relatives.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Holmes Memorial Chapel with Pastor Terry Clark officiating. Burial with military rites by the Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and the Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in the Center Ridge Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Maurice Lewis, Raymond Bailey, Alamar Lewis, Jesse Whitlock, Lorenzo Lewis and Eric Whitlock. Visitation is 4-8:00 p.m. Tuesday.
