Constance "Connie" Pleasant Johnson, 87, of Sullivan passed away Friday, July 24, 2009 in her residence. The 1939 graduate of Merom High School was born December 20, 1921 in Sullivan County to Gault Pleasant and Constance Watson Pleasant. For most of her life Connie farmed with her husband near Merom. She was a Sunday School teacher at the Merom Methodist Church for several years and was active with 4-H programs. Connie, attended Bethel College in Newton, KS from 1939-1941. She was an accomplished seamstress, cook, bookkeeper, artist and watercolor art teacher. She was active in politics and was selected "Republican Woman of the Year" in Sullivan Co. in 1984. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Merom Improvement Assoc., the Home Economics Club, the Sullivan County Art Guild and the Friday Afternoon Club. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years William "Bill" Johnson who died July 21, 2005, her parents and two grandchildren.
Survivors include four daughters, Sue Ellen Chappell and husband Bruce of Cave Creek, AZ; Nancy Jeanine Tomey and husband Bob of Merom, Constance Louise Wesner and husband Brian of Greenwood, Julie Anne Sheffler and husband Dan of Sullivan, nine grandchildren, Lori Chappell Briggs and husband Andy, William Johnson Chappell and wife Christine; Jennifer Tomey and companion Maricela Rodarte; Jeanine Tomey Arthur and husband Michael; Jacqueline Tomey and fiancé Patrick Adsit; Chris Wesner and wife Kerry; David Wesner and wife Kyra; Sara Sheffler and Matthew Sheffler, seventeen great grandchildren, Annie, Emma, Isaac, Ava and Eli Wesner, Kristen and Allison Briggs, William and Xavier Chappell, Megan, Joshua, Jacob and Madison Arthur, Carter Tomey and Sarah, Amanda and Kelsey Jimenez. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruth Elizabeth Pleasant Kult, Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Lois Margaret Pleasant Milam, Oceanside, CA. and other relatives.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Holmes Memorial Chapel with Rev. Paul McGlasson officiating. Burial will be in the Merom Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8:00 p.m. Monday. Pallbearers will be Chris Wesner, David Wesner, Brian Wesner, Robert Tomey, Bill Chappell, Bruce Chappell, Matthew Sheffler and Dan Sheffler. Those who wish may make donations to the Merom Improvement Scholarship Fund, the First Presbyterian Church Community Kitchen or the Sullivan County Art Guild.
