Joseph F. "Joe" Usrey, 79, of Sullivan died at 2:57 a.m. Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. The 1947 graduate of Sullivan High School was born August 19, 1929 in Sullivan to Ferd Usrey and Mary Crawford Usrey. Joe was a retired manager for Black Lumber, a former bookkeeper for Shelburn Farm Bureau Co-Op and worked at a Golf Pro Shop in Texas. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Sullivan American Legion. He was preceded in death by his daughter Jo Ann Smith, his parents, three brothers Bynum, Crawford and Ferd Usrey, Jr. and three sisters Gladys Pinkston Lowdermilk, Opal White and Geneva Persinger.
Survivors include his wife fifty-six years Wilma Jean Ritchey Usrey whom he married August 23, 1952, one son Rick (and Sara) Usrey of Graysville, one son in law Roger W. Smith, three sisters Betty Kennedy, Indianapolis, Phyllis Love, Seattle and Mary Thompson, Wisconsin, six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and other relatives.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Sullivan First Christian Church with Revs. Dale Wise and David Cox officiating. Burial with military rites by the Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and the Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in Center Ridge Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Holmes Memorial Chapel, Sullivan
