Ann Cummins Pierce, 85, Sullivan, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Miller's Health Care Center, Sullivan.

She was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Sullivan to Clarence "Fuzzy" and Esther Metcalf Cummins. The 1938 graduate of Shelburn High School studied education at Indiana State University. She eloped in 1942 with her sweetheart, Robert Wayne Pierce, who was serving in the U.S. Army. They were married for 63 years. She taught school at Elm Park for four years before retiring to stay home and care for her family. She dedicated her life to caring for her husband and sons, and she felt this was her greatest accomplishment and biggest pleasure in life. She was a member of the Sullivan First Christian Church and the Friday Afternoon Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died July 12, 2005; one son, Jon Scott Pierce; an infant daughter, Ann Christine Pierce; and her parents.

Survivors include one son, Robert "Bob" (and Julie) Pierce, Sullivan; two grandchildren, R. Lincoln (and Suzanne) Pierce, Evansville, and Taylor Ann Pierce, Sullivan; two great-grandchildren, Payton and Parker Pierce; and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holmes Memorial Chapel, Sullivan, with the Rev. Dale Wise officiating. Burial will be in Center Ridge Cemetery, Sullivan. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Pallbearers will be Lincoln Pierce, Caleb Lyttle, Bill Pierce, Mike Steele, Del Unger and Jeff Weber. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Pierce, Jerry Kunkel, Kenny Kimmel, Reggie Laconi, Bruce Laconi, Jim Hartman, Robert Lowry and Howard Unger. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Sullivan First Christian Church Building Fund, 105 N. Broad St., Sullivan, IN 47882.
