Donald Lee Arnett, 79, of Graysville passed away at 9:26 a.m. Friday, December 25, 2009 in Union Hospital after a brief illness. The 1948 graduate of Merom High School was born June 17, 1930 in Merom to Lawrence Arnett and Ovaline Brown Arnett. He graduated from Indiana State Teacher's College in 1958 and taught at Gerstmeyer High School and then at Terre Haute South Vigo High School from which he retired in 1992. He was a long time member of Kingsley United Methodist Church. Donald, was a devoted husband, father and an active member of his community, he also had an avid interest in local history. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War where he served five years as a first lieutenant. He was a member of the Sullivan American Legion and the Sullivan VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-father Rea Hoilman.
Survivors include his wife of fifty three years Mary Matz Arnett of Graysville whom he married December 16, 1956, one son Larry (and Brook) Arnett, Sullivan, two daughters Donna (and Patrick) Harvey of St. Louis and Peggy (and Len) Mroz of Bloomington, IL, one sister Christine Stultz of Merom Station, three grandchildren Kristin Mroz, Mitchell Mroz and Madison Mroz and other relatives. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Holmes Memorial Chapel with Rev. Paul Myers officiating. Burial with military graveside rites by the Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and the Sullivan VFW will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery. Visitation is 4:30-8 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Kingsley Memorial UMC, 8996 W. CR. 600 N., Fairbanks, IN 47849 or the Gill Township Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, 360 W. Washington St., Sullivan, IN 47882.
