Thomas Allen "Tom" Vickrey, 88, of Sullivan, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Saturday, August 21, 2010, at 3:10 a.m. at his home, surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident and farmer in Sullivan County, he was born to Thomas Christopher and Sarah Elsie Pugh Vickrey on January 5, 1922.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-four years, Beverly Jane Lind Vickrey, whom he married May 9, 1953.
He was a 1940 graduate of Sullivan High School, a member, deacon, and elder of the First Presbyterian Church, a lifetime member of the Sullivan American Legion and the Sullivan Elks Lodge #911. Tom was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, having served in the 207th Engineers Combat Battalion. In 2009, he was inducted into the SWSAA Hall of Fame for his participation in high school football.
Survivors include three daughters Vera Jean Vickrey, Sarah Ann Brown, Kimberly Beth Cox, and her husband Mark, all of Sullivan, one sister Ruth Carter, of Sullivan. Eight grandchildren, Christa Lammers, Carrie Lammers, Katie Shackelford, Tom Lammers, Tom Thacker, Micah Thacker, Samantha Meier, and Tommy Brown. Nine great grandchildren, Dakota Austin Davis, Abigail Grace Shackelford, Emma Faith Shackelford, Ella Hope Shackelford, Madison Paige Thacker, Gatlin Paul Thacker, Xavier Jacob Lee Thacker, Roslyn Hope Meier, and Olive Greer Hedges, and other relatives.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Harold Christopher, Billy Ray, Robert Frederick, and Paul Gene Vickrey, two sisters, Helen V. Motsinger, and Laura Frances "Teen" Carty.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at the Holmes Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Don Ransford and Paul McGlasson officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites by the Sullivan, Shelburn, and Hymera American Legions, and the Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be in the Center Ridge Cemetery. Casket bearers and honorary casket bearers will be Tom Lammers, Tom Thacker, Micah Thacker, Tommy Brown, Chriss Carter, Tom Carter, Billy Vickrey, Mark Cox, and Phil Lammers. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 24, 2010, 4-8:00 p.m. with Elks memorial services at 7:00 p.m.
