Leland A. "Pat" Padgett, of Sullivan passed away at 1:28 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Millers Merry Manor, in Sullivan, IN.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie Ellen Sparks Padgett, children Janna Beth LeMay, Jay K. Padgett (Tammie), Jon M. Padgett, and grandchildren Kris (Courtney) Walters of Sullivan, Zak Padgett of Casey, IL., Ariana, Josh and Auston Padgett, and one great-grandchild Landon Walters all of Sullivan. Leland was born April 29, 1925 in Sullivan to Marion and Lora Ladson Padgett. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Sullivan where he did not miss Sunday School for over 18 years, Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, and the American Legion. He retired from CSX Railroad after 47 years of employment and earned the nickname "Ironman" because he was willing to work anytime under any conditions.
He proudly served his country in the Marine Corps during World War II. He left basic training with a medal for being the best rifleman and was promoted to Private First Class. Leland was on the fourth landing wave to hit the beaches of Iwo Jima where many of his comrades were lost in battle.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, children, grand-children, and friends.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan, with Rev. Timothy Fleece officiating. Viewing will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00PM. Burial will be in Center Ridge Cemetery with military grave rites provided by the Sullivan, Hymera and Shelburn American Legion Posts and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
