Betty Jean Riggs, 77, of Sullivan passed away at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the Sullivan County Community Hospital after her fifteen year battle with COPD. The 1952 graduate and valedictorian of Graysville High School was born May 27, 1934 in Sullivan to Jessie Harris and Elda Parr Harris. She was a teachers aid at the Shelburn elementary School, a past member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority and Secretary of the Northeast Band Boosters. She was the youngest of six siblings and was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Forrest, Loren and Wayne Harris and two sisters Maxine Abel and Freeda Hayden.

Survivors include her husband of thirty-nine years Mark A. Riggs of Sullivan whom she married September 17, 1971 ,one son Mark S. (and Mindi) Riggs, Palestine, IL, one grandson Zackary Riggs, two step-grandsons Chase and Rider Lawhorn all of Palestine, one brother-in-law Monte (and Barbara) Riggs, Terre Haute, one sister-in-law Norma Harris, Sullivan and other relatives.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Center Ridge Cemetery with Rev. Don Ransford officiating.
