Jackie B. Smith, 83, Sullivan, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Terre Haute Union Hospital. He was born Aug. 9, 1927 in Cotton Valley, AL to Bervil T. Smith and Nannie Cobb Smith. He was employed 35 years by Pfizer & Co. in the Quality Control, Biological Vaccine and Research Divisions. Jack graduated from Sullivan High School with the class of 1945. He served in the Merchant Marines and with the U. S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann Kaufman Smith, two Daughters: Jacklyn Ann (and Tom) Johnson, Mary Beth (and Mike) McKinley, and a son, Thomas D. (and Janice) Smith all of Sullivan. Five grandchildren, Laura Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Jeff (and Natalie) McKinley, Sarah McKinley and Thomas Smith and 3 great grandchildren, Carter, Carson and Max. He is also survived by three sisters, Lorene Hankins of Sullivan, Janice (and Bill) Sevier of New Palestine, IN and Mary Lou Corwin of Vero Beach, FL. along with several nieces and nephews.

Jack and the family spent many enjoyable years at their weekend cabin on the Dugger Lake. He was an avid golfer and co-founder of the Sullivan Rinky Dinks Senior Golf League. He was a member of Sullivan BPOE, Elks, Sullivan American Legion and VFW. Jack served on Sullivan City Council for many years and also was a Sullivan City Precinct Committee member.

Visitation will be at Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday, July12, 2011. Elks Services will be 7:00 P.M. Graveside services will be Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 1:00 pm. at Center Ridge Cemetery, Sullivan, with Harold Medsker officiating and with military services by Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera American Legions and the Sullivan Veterans of Foreign Wars.

If you choose, donations can be made to the Sullivan Humane Society or the National Kidney Foundation. Envelopes will be available at visitation.
