Name Unknown

January 2, 1925 — June 9, 2013

William "Bill" Thomas Sr. of Shelburn passed away June 9, 2013 at his residence. Bill was born January 2, 1925 to Josiah and Flora Etta (Gower) Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Ruth Naomi (Boyce) Thomas. After receiving signed permission from his mother, Bill joined the Navy at the age of 16 where he served as a gunner on the USS Bunker Hill. Someone must have been praying for him because the gunner position he was assigned to was bombed two days after he had been reassigned. He fought for our country overseas so the battle wouldn't be here on American soil. Bill led an active life up to the time he passed away. On his last day on earth he had taken his sweet baby dog "Sparkie Lee" for his usual ride around town. Also, on that day he got to eat turtle meat that his son had brought him. A few days earlier his other son had visited him, and we got to see our brother put his arm around Dad and pat him on his back. Our dad knew that we loved him. He was at his favorite place "his front porch" doing the thing he liked best, taking things apart to recycle. Survivors include sons Bill (Sharon) Thomas of Sullivan and Jim (Rita) Thomas of Fairbanks, daughter Sue and her son J. Thomas and grand kids, great-grand kids, and one great great granddaughter. He was a long time member of the Shelburn American Legion. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations be made to the Children's Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. His great-great-granddaughter had received tremendous care there. Bill would also appreciate in his honor taking your kids, grand kids or pet for a ride. Per his request no services will be held. Holmes Memorial Chapel of Sullivan was entrusted with the arrangements.
