Rebecca Stapleton

Rebecca L. Grable Stapleton 88, of Terre Haute IN, formally of Sullivan IN passed away December 3, 2023, at 12 am at her son’s home in Marshall IL surrounded by family. She was born January 4, 1935, in Sullivan IN to William and Opal Butler.  She was first married to Richard Grable, and he preceded her in death Jan 23, 1966. She later married Jack Stapleton on Sept 16, 1978, and he preceded her in death June 25, 2012.

In addition, she was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Juanita Butler, Naomi Durman, Betty Wright, Melba Ring, Thelma (Rose) Whitlock, Hazel Wright and Donna Kay Butler, her brothers James Butler, Charles Butler, and Johnnie Butler.

Surviving is her only child Thomas (Kim) Grable of Marshall IL, sister Mary Frederick of Bradenton FL, three grandsons Alex (Brandi) Grable of Graysville IN, Braydon Grable, and Chandler Grable of Marshall IL, two great-grandsons Drake Grable and River Grable, three step-grandchildren Ashleigh (Jacob) Poorman, Skyler McManus and Jeighla McManus all of Marshall IL and several nieces and nephews.

She went to Union High School in Dugger IN.  She worked as the Sullivan County Recorder 1966-1970, then she worked at the State Senate as a Deputy Register, after that she was the bookkeeper for her husband Jack while he oversaw the 911 services in Sullivan County, while in Fort Wayne, she was a Voter Registration for Allen County where she retired from. She was a lifelong member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Sullivan IN since 1962, ALS Awareness Association of IN, the Democrat party, American Legion Post 139 Auxiliary and the Moose Lodge in Sullivan IN.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St.Mary’s Church Friday December 8, 2023 at 12:00 noon with Father Suresh Bakka officiating.  Visitation will be at Holmes Memorial Chapel from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 at the funeral home. Memorial donations made to Sarah Bush Hospice of Mattoon, IL. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
