Richard G. Ayers, 98, of Sullivan left his earthly life behind on February 28, 2026, surrounded by the loved ones he cherished. He began his life journey on September 10,1927 in Sullivan, County the son of the late Parker and Effie Mason Ayers. He married his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Virginia Pierce, on September 27,1948. Together they shared 7 children, who were deeply loved and raised with pride. He retired from Pfizer, after many dedicated years of service. Richard was proud to serve his country in the United States Navy.

He attended CrossRoads Community Church and was a member of the Sullivan American Legion Post #139. He was also a 78 year member of The Masonic Lodge joining Hymera Lodge in 1948, later moving his membership to Sullivan Lodge 263. He was from childhood an outdoor enthusiast that was environmentally aware, enjoying fishing, mushroom hunting and gardening in his spare time. You could find him on his daily walks with his walking stick, along with a paper bag in his back pocket to pick mushrooms, or any other treasure he might find. He always had a smile and a wave to those passing bye. His knowledge was unmeasurable of the Presidents, he was a true history buff, listing the names in order and dates of anything you might ask that pertained to their Presidency or legacy. He was an avid collector of pocket knives, fishing reels and lures. He also enjoyed making lures and repairing old tackle boxes and gear.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and caring for those who were privileged to call him, Dad, Grandpa and GPa. His heartfelt, caring and kindness were known to all. He was always willing to lend a helping hand for not only his loved ones, but also for those who needed his support and guidance. His feeding the many "hobos" that traveled the tracks and came to his door for food, was just a testament of who he truly was. His passing will leave a void in the family circle, all while his love and compassion will remain in their hearts a lifetime.

Those anxiously awaiting his arrival at the gates of Heaven are, his parents, his loving wife, Virginia Ayers, children, Richard Allen Ayers and Jacqueline Lou Ayers, along with siblings, Larry Ayers, Wanda Kilzer, Betty Ayers and his special uncles, Ed and Pricey .

Those here to continue his legacy are his sons, Bruce Ayers (Debra) and Tim Ayers (Lisa); daughters, Sharon L. Leturgez Russell, Rebecca “BJ” White (Tom) and Cathy Booker (Joe). Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
