Richard Lee McCowen slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, June 19, 2025 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by those he cherished. Richard began his life journey on May 30,1943 in Terre Haute, IN. born one of 2 sons to the late Clifford and Bonnie Suthard McCowen French. He was a graduate of Wiley High School, where he was a member of the Wiley football team. In 1973 he married his life partner, Phyllis Ann Means. Together they embraced life nurturing their children and cherishing each new day. Richard was the current owner / operator of McCowen Construction and Architectural Design. He was President of the Construction Technology Group, when they were awarded the Varco-Pruden Authorized Builder for steel buildings for the Wabash Valley.
Richard was passionately civic minded, he believed deeply in giving back to his community from what he was blessed with. He was active with the Lions Club, Noon Optimists and Crossroads Community Church. He spent many dedicated years with the Farmersburg Fire Department. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and camping at Sullivan County Park and Lake. He was first and foremost a loving caring family man, his family was his greatest treasure. His caring heart and love was apparent to all that knew him, He had a great sense of humor, and he took pride in their home being the center of where memories were made, with family gatherings full of laughter and love.
Those awaiting his Heavenly arrival were his parents; sons, Richard McCowen and John McCowen, along with a brother, James McCowen.
Those here to continue his legacy are his wife, Phyllis McCowen; children, Tim Kress (Starr), David McCowen, Cheryl Cottrell (Rick), and Scott McCowen (Regina) and a daughter in-law, Debbie McCowen. 15 grandchildren,19 great- grandchildren, along with extended family and friends.
Services to celebrate a life well lived, will be on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Holmes Memorial Chapel, with visitation from 11:00 am until time of service at 1:00 pm. with Pastor Peter Bales officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery.
