September 3rd was a peaceful, sunny, Sunday afternoon when the family of Sammie Lee Gilbert, 86 of Lewis, gathered around for the comfort of the man. Shortly after the clock struck 12:30, his children, daughter, Penny and Rob Baker, son's, Jeff Gilbert, Pat and Jan Gilbert, Jed and Terri Gilbert along with wife, Cheri Gilbert and several of the grandchildren, stood by Sam's bedside as he drew his last breath in the comfort of his own home.
Sam was born on February 3, 1931 to Edward Gilbert Sr. and May Swalls Gilbert of Terre Haute. He attended East Glen School. Sammie served in the US Army during the Korean War. After the war, he came home to take a job in the mining field where he would later retire from Hawthorn Mine.
Sam married Nancy Robertson in 1958 and would raise their four children at the homestead in Lewis. Sam was also a farmer who enjoyed raising and trading livestock, but was mostly known for his team of horses. Sadly, Sam and the kids lost Nancy to cancer in 1993. He remarried Cheri Brown in 2015 after being together nearly a decade, adding not only her to the family, but now Sam's step-son Jacob Brown.
Sam was a family man. He was a great father but was an even greater grand-father to Nichole Gilbert-Langford and Josh Langford, Derek Gilbert, Chelsea and Seth Kinnett, Dustin Gilbert, Heather and Daniel LaFave, Jessica Gilbert and Rick May, Amanda and Caleb Gilman, Lacey and Erica Gilbert, Hunter Baker, Bailee Baker and Donald Pierce, great-grandchildren - Cole Gilbert, Case Langford, Connor May, Kinsley and Lucas LaFave, Colton Kinnett and baby Elle on the way. Survivors include the five children, 11 grand-children, 6 great-grandchildren and his youngest brother Jack and Linda Gilbert of Lewis. Sam was proceeded in death by his parents, Edward Sr. and May Gilbert, wife - Nancy Gilbert, his four brothers Stanley "Tuff", Bill Earl, Ed Jr., Leslie "Pete" Gilbert, brother in-law Roy Robertson and grand-daughter Emmalee Gilbert.
