Sherrill James Thompson, 93, of Shelburn passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. He was born April 17, 1924 to Walter and Mildred Thompson. Sherrill was a life-long resident of Shelburn, other than the three years he served his country in World War 2 on the west coast, Europe and in the South Pacific, as well as living in Chicago, Illinois for two years while he attended classes after he was discharged from the service.
Sherrill married Elizabeth Ellen (Betty) Yowell on October 29, 1950. They were married for 60 years until the time of her passing in December 2010. Survivors include their children: Todd (Linda) of St. Louis, Missouri, Jay (Robin) of Rio Rico, Arizona, Jani (Mark) of Vancouver, Washington, Dwight of Nashville, Indiana and Alane (Doug) of Keller, Texas; his daughter-in-law Anne of Cudahy, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren Rachel, Justin, Christopher, Molly, Mitchell, Russell, Morgan, Analiese and Amelia; and two great-granddaughters: Katherine Jean and Lola Jean.
Sherrill was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty in 2010, their sons Blake in 2004, an infant son Brian in 1959, and his daughter-in-law Jean in 2014.
After a 35-year career, Sherrill retired in April 1986 from Pfizer, Incorporated and enjoyed his retirement with Betty traveling around the globe to visit their children and grandchildren.
Sherrill was a life-long member at the First Baptist Church of Shelburn where he served and taught Sunday school for many years and was the unofficial photographer on the daily progress during construction of the new church building that was completed in 2005.
He supported his community through volunteer work on the Little Flock Cemetery Board, Shelburn Senior Housing Board, a member of the Shelburn Ruritan and as a board member of the Northeast School Corporation.
Visitation is Sunday January 7, 2018 from 2-6p.m. at Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan. Funeral service will be held at 10a.m. on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Shelburn First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ben Weatherington officiating. Graveside services and burial with military honor will follow at Little Flock Cemetery in Shelburn. Memorial donations may be made to Shelburn First Baptist Church, Little Flock Cemetery Association or the charity of your choice.
