Steven Reed

Steven L. Reed, 95, of Shelburn, entered Heaven's gates on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. He was born in Grass Range, MT on March 25, 1920 to Clarence Reed and Flossie (Nesbit) Reed. He was a 1938 graduate of Sullivan High School, and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, having been a Veteran of WWII. He was a B-29 flight engineer and was stationed in the Caribbean. Steve returned from the war to complete his bachelor's degree in Agriculture and then a master's degree in animal husbandry and nutrition, both at Purdue University. He was a member of the Shelburn American Legion 197, Shelburn Masonic Lodge 560 Past Worshipful Master, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shriners, The Gideons, Indiana State Retired Teachers Association, Ruritan Club, a 55 year member of the Elks, past president of the Sullivan County Farm Bureau, past president of the Indiana State Angus Association, and served as a 4-H cattle judge throughout the Midwest. Steve was also a member and elder of the Shelburn First Christian Church. First and foremost, Steve's life was centered on his love for the Lord and his family. Steve's passion was farming, growing crops, and raising horses and Black Angus cattle on his Shelburn farm. Steve was also dedicated to educating Sullivan Countians, having proudly served for many years as Principal of Fairbanks Elementary and Assistant Principal and teacher at North Central High School. Preceding him in death are his parents, a brother, John Reed, and a sister, Hazel Sevier.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Pauline (Stevenson) Reed, whom he married on November 14, 1948; a son, Brad (Corrine) Reed of Carmel; a daughter, Shelley (Randy) Nichols of Sullivan; a sister, Irene Smith of Medora; and five grandchildren: Tyler Nichols, Ashley (Bryce) Bement, Alane (Kyle O'Neal) Nichols, Andrea Nichols, and Andrew Reed.

Services for Steve will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Joseph LaFollette officiating. Visitation will be on Friday 4-8:00 p.m. with masonic services at 7:30 p.m. and visitation on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Shelburn First Christian Church, the Sullivan County 4-H, or the Gideons. Military Grave rites will be given by the Hymera, Shelburn and Sullivan American Legions and the VFW.

Services for Steve will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Joseph LaFollette officiating. Visitation will be on Friday 4-8:00 p.m. with masonic services at 7:30 p.m. and visitation on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services.
