Dennis A. Harmon, 83, of Sullivan was called to eternal home with Jesus, with his family beside him, on April 28, 2023, at Good Samaritan hospital. He was born October 1, 1939, in Riverview in Sullivan County to Zernie and Esta (Hunt) Harmon. He was a 1957, Sullivan High school graduate, enlisted with the United States Air Force after graduation and went on to have a very prestigious career in the aviation industry. His Air Force career took him to 4 tours of duty in Vietnam and the Arab and Israeli conflict in 1973. As a Vietnam pilot he received 3 medals for Flying over dangerous territory, Good conduct and Vietnam campaign, along with the Yom Kippur Medal. During his 20 years of service to his country as a flight engineer, he entered into the “Boot Strap” program he continued his education at Southern IL. University earning his bachelor’s degree in business, continuing to ISU obtaining Masters degrees in business and aviation technology. Where he returned to VU and ISU to share his love of aviation by teaching. He was awarded the very prestigious 50 year “Charles Taylor Master Mechanic” award, there were only 11 other’s awarded this in the entire nation at the time of presentation. Dennis was a member of Central Baptist Church, where his love and devotion to help others was shown. He was a member of the Sullivan American Legion post 139, E.A.A., Soaring Society of America. He was owner of Rehoboth Aviation , while being manager for Robinson IL airport. He also enjoyed a career with American Trans Air as part of the flight team. One of his passions in life was to help those less fortunate, that led to being a founding member of Computers for Kids, that took donated computers to reprogram for homes that did not have one. He would go into the homes, set up and teach the recipients how to use them. His true life passion was to help those in need.
Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sharon whom he married in 1975, siblings, Tom Harmon and Gay Kennett; step son, William “Bill Dick” Monk.
Surviving him are his son, Patrick (Michelle) Harmon, Fairbanks, daughters, Linda Harmon, St Louis, Pam (Dave) Jobe, Sullivan, Jackie (Scott) Campbell, Vincennes, Cindy (Matt) Tallyn, Virginia Beach VA, Step children, Dianna Enochs and Frank Monk ; grandchildren, Josh Wright, Tara Byrd, Mick Wurtsbaugh, Luke Jobe, Jordan, Jacob and Jaclyn Campbell, Harmon and Samuel Tallyn; 7 great grandchildren, sisters, Gail Hammer and LeAnne Huls, along with several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at Holmes Memorial Chapel, Thursday May 4, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Pastor David Simpson will officiate . Burial will follow at Pogue cemetery.
