John Cox Obituary

John D Cox, 63, of Dugger passed away at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis on Friday, August 6, 2021 with his loving family by his side.  He was born in Dugger on June 29, 1958 to James Leslie Cox, Sr. and Doris Pauline (Chubb) Cox Jackson.  John was a 1977 graduate of Union High School and had been the owner of Cox Logging and Cox’s Feed and Lead. He worked at Oxide Chemical and Peabody Coal Company for 37 years. He was full of life, always had to be working on a project and never had time to sit around and if he did take time off, it was to be with his children, grandchildren and friends. He loved to laugh, make people laugh with him and was a larger than life figure to his family and friends. He was the founder of Lil Dogs Football, Jasonville Community Football league, and others, and had coached at all levels for over 40 years. He was involved with 4-H and Boy Scouts.  John was a member of the UMWA 1410 and 1423 of Indiana and 9177 of West Virginia and the Laborers Union 204 of Indiana. He was an avid Golfer, dog breeder, trainer, hunter, had been inducted into the UKC Hall of Fame, and was a member of United Kennel Club and Professional Kennel Club. John’s most important memberships were in the Pleasantville United Methodist Church, White Rose Pentecostal Church and the Linton First Christian Church.

 

Preceding him in death were his parents, his step dad George Robert Jackson, sisters Portia Swiger, and Janice Groves.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 30 years, Tina(Bowman) Cox; sons Gerry(Samantha) Pirtle of Lyons and Austin Cox of  Linton; daughters Jessica(Travis) Martin of Dugger, Johna (Thomas) Schaefer of Dugger, Angel Bowman Conway of Linton and Tanna Jo Reed of Dugger;  brothers James (Christy) Cox of Linton, George Robert II of NC and Randy Jackson of NC; sisters Marsha Turpin of Dugger, Daphene (Denny) Bargar of Dugger, Linda (David) Lucas of Warsaw, Robbie Mejean of Linton and Kimberly Jackson of Jasonville; grandchildren Taryn, Brennen and Logan Martin, Keaton and Kera Schaefer, Kale and Karson Reed, Dresden, Delilah and Deztin Conway and Braxton and Gabriel Pirtle; one great-grandson Lucas Marsh; brother in-laws David(Stephanie) Bowman of Greenwood and Ricky(Robin) Bowman of Linton; several nieces, nephews and other family members.

 

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the Linton First Christian Church, 9878 West Ind. 54 Linton, IN., with Revs.Archie Ellett, Jerry Brown,  Ricky Bowman,  Michael Goodman, Darren Carey and William Yockey officiating.  Visitation will be on Friday, August 13, 2021 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Everything will be at the Church. Burial will be at Pleasantville. Services have been entrusted to Holmes Memorial Chapel. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with final expenses. Envelopes will be available at the Church.
