John Monk, 83, of Merom, passed away on March 28, 2023, at home with family by his side. He was born on April 26, 1939, in Graysville to Wilbur Lotton Monk and Pearl (Ransford) Monk. John was a 1957 graduate of Graysville High School, had gone to Farrier School in Mineral Wells TX, he worked as a union carpenter most of his life, and retired from the Union Hall 21 years ago. He was involved in the Sullivan County 4H and the Merom Chautauqua. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church. He loved horses, softball, gardening and cooking. Going to horse pulls and spending time with his family were a big part of John’s life. Preceding him in death are his parents and his wife Joan, brothers William, Gene, Junior, a sister Nina Rose Gill and a son in-law David Scott.
Survivors include his children, Kevin (Jackie) Monk, Kerri (Dennis) Hamilton, Lynne (Bob) Arnett, Rebecca Scott (Mike Frey), brother Michael Monk, grandchildren, Kristopher Hamilton, Robert Arnett, Kayla Flenar, Ryan Arnett, Kendall Monk, Reece Scott, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday April 5, 2023 at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Pastor Eric Blevins officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday April 4, from 4-8:00 p.m. Burial will be at Johnson Cemetery.
