Hymera,
Larry George Shepherd, went to be with the Lord Almighty on February 25, 2023, surrounded by family. Larry was born on May 25, 1941, to Lester Snowden Shepherd and Sylvia Opal Smith Shepherd, in Oakwood IL. He attended Hymera High School and graduated in 1959. He was a member of Hymera Bethel Hill Church. He was a past Master Mason and a 50 Year member of the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Stars.
Larry worked in the coal industry for Peabody Coal Company for many years and retired in 1995. After retirement he consulted for them. In earlier years he was also a farmer and taught his children to work. He and his wife also hosted several foreign exchange students over the years. Not one to sit still, he did a lot of vacationing in the motorhome with his kids and grandkids; he wintered in Texas and Florida, went on many cruises; and spent countless hours driving a tractor trailer over the road and loving every moment. In the summer time he always took the opportunity for many years to be a volunteer cabin parent/mentor at Bethel Youth church camp and proudly earned the name “Mad Dog”.
Preceding him in death are his parents Lester and Sylvia(Smith) Shepherd; his brothers Porter Lester and Carl Leon Shepherd; and a son, Cory Stephen Shepherd. Survivors include his wife of 45 years Janie(Axe) Shepherd of Shelburn; daughters, Tammy Sue (Mike Gilbert); Kellee Jo (Brent Stevenson); Kiersten Lee Dumond (Bobby Orr) all of Shelburn, and son Ritchie Shepherd (Amy Hood) of Henderson Kentucky, and French exchange son Laurent Grélard (Lillie) of Keller Texas.
Larry had 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grandchildren. He was able to FaceTime his last great granddaughter after she was born 2 weeks ago and he was so happy. His family meant everything to him and we will all miss his great love and support.
Services will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Pastors Jim Salyer and Norman Santus officiating. Visitation will be on Friday March 3, 2023 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Masonic Services will be at 7:00 PM. Burial will be at Claiborne Cemetery where he will rest in peace between his father and his son.
