Mary Ann Smith (93) of Sullivan, Indiana passed away peacefully at The Waters of Sullivan on June 27, 2023 after a brief illness. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and wife. Mary Ann was born June 24 th , 1930, in Sullivan, Indiana to Charles E. and Mary E. Maley Kaufman. She attended Sullivan High School and was a member of the graduating class of 1948. Mary Ann was a life-
long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sullivan, where she volunteered and prepared food for countless church events for many years. When Mary Ann’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. But even by the standards of the era, Mary Ann was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family, friends, and neighbors. She loved to play cards with them and never passed up the opportunity for a game of Blitz, Bridge or Hand & and; Foot. Mary Ann married the late Jack B Smith in 1948 and they lived together in Sullivan for 63 years.
She is survived by two children, Jacklyn Smith Johnson, and Thomas Smith (Janice) of Sullivan; son-in-law, Michael McKinley of Sullivan; her grandchildren Jeff McKinley (Natalie), and Sarah McKinley (Eric Wade) of Sullivan, Laura Johnson Heape (Ryan) of Indianapolis, Caleb Johnson (Jodeana) of Merom, and Thomas Smith (Meghan) of Terre Haute; her great-grandchildren, Carter Wade, Carson Wade, Max McKinley, Willow Johnson, Katherine Heape, William Johnson and Wallace Smith; one sister-in-law, Janice Smith Sevier of New Palestine, Indiana.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her loving husband in 2011, daughter, Mary Beth Smith McKinley, and son-in-law, Thomas Johnson, in 2018. The loss of her presence leaves a tremendous void in the lives of those left behind.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday July 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with Father Suresh Bakka officiating. Sullivan, immediately followed by interment at Center Ridge Cemetery. Holmes Memorial Chapel were entrusted with arrangements.
