Mary Louise Simmers

Mary Louise Simmers, age 100, of Sullivan, went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 17, 2020.  She was born on July 26, 1919, in Sullivan County to Gilbert H. and Maude Ford Simmers.

Mary was a 1937 graduate of Sullivan High School and immediately after graduation she was employed as a Secretary at the Lindley and Gallagher Law Firm, the Sullivan County Welfare Department, and Hays & Hays Law Firm.  She was retired in 1980 from Indiana & Michigan’s Breed Power Plant after 20 years of service as a Personnel Secretary.  She had also been a past president of the business and Professional Women.

Mary became a member of the First Baptist Church in Sullivan, Indiana in 1941, and served in many capacities including Church School Superintendent, Board of Christian Education Chair, Church Clerk and Church Librarian.  Mary also had a love for music and she was the director of the Church choir for over 30 years.

In addition to her love for music, Mary loved reading, listening to all sports on the radio, and particularly her Cubs baseball team.

She was predeceased by her parents, a brother Lee Simmers; a sister, Pauline Akers; an infant sister, Dorothy Marie Simmers; a special nephew, Robert Simmers; and a special niece, Mary Jane Ames.

Surviving are nephew and nieces whom she thought of as her own: Jo Ann Wilson, of Wilfred; Gary Akers of Kokomo, Darrell Akers (and Treola) of Robinson, IL; Greg Akers (and Karen) of Huntingburg, IN; and Sally Boyles, of Jasper, Indiana.  She is also survived by several great nieces and great nephews.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2020 at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Pastor Ron Riggs and Pastor Bret Cox officiating.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services.  Burial will be at Center Ridge Cemetery.
