Michael Lane Shorter (aka “Heavy”), 68, passed away on September 24, 2021, at Sullivan County Community Hospital with his loved ones by his side. He was the husband of Lee Shorter, who he shared 44 years together with.
Born in Sullivan, Indiana, he was the son of Victor and Esther Shorter. He graduated from Sullivan High School in 1971. He retired from Peabody Coal and was employed at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841.
His hobbies include fishing, hunting, horse racing, horse pulling, and watching his grandchildren play sports. He will be remembered for his genuine love for his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Lee Shorter, his three children, Josh (Jaime) Shorter, Jeremy (Nikki) Shorter, Laci (Joey) Mayfield; his siblings, Ronnie (Ann) Shorter, Beverly Coulson, Rex (Arlene) Shorter, Vicki (Ben) Springer, Debbie (Joe) Robbins; several grandchildren, Chance, Delainey, Gracie and Parker Shorter, Caylee, Cacey, and Cadan Shorter, Lillian and Lane Mayfield; one great-grandson, Landon Shorter; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, and one brother, Jerry Shorter.
There will be a visitation held on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at Holmes Memorial Chapel from 4-7 p.m. with funeral services from 7-8 p.m.
