Renatta (Cunningham) Pigg, 97, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 16, 2023, at The Waters Nursing Home, with her family by her side.
She was born October 5, 1925, to Glessie G and Ethel Dodd Cunningham. She was a 1943 graduate of Sullivan High school, where she was a member of a group of eight girls called “The Chatterbox”.
She attended the Union Hospital Nursing School from 1943- 1945, where she received her registered nursing degree. During that time she treated and cared for many veterans returning from World War 2. She became a surgical nurse at Union Hospital and later worked at Mary Sherman Hospital in Sullivan.
In 1948 she married Byron “Barney” Pigg from Dugger. After their marriage they lived in Graysville IN until their home burned, and they moved to the Riley Dodd Farm near Shelburn, where they raised cattle and farmed for many years.
In 1958 she and Barney purchased the Allis-Chalmers dealership from the Wallace Springer Estate. She did double-duty nursing and working at the business, but eventually left nursing to work full-time at the business.
In 1960 they moved the business from New Lebanon to Sullivan, where it is still located.
Renatta loved to travel, spending many winters in Florida. She loved her flowers, working in her yard, and watching birds. She was a long-time member of the First Christian Church and missionary Unit 6.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Rick, and two brothers, Junior and Jim.
She is survived by her son Randy (Karen); her grandchildren; (Chad and Kerryn), Shan, (Cale and Kerri;) her great grandchildren Andy, Gaby, Josie, and Corinne; a sister in law Patty, niece Kelly, and nephew Michael.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Howard Unger officiating. Visitation will be on Friday April 21, 2023 from 4:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. at Holmes Memorial Chapel. In Lieu of flowers gifts can be made to the Sullivan Humane Society of Sullivan.
