Robert Lee Bowen, 73, of Sullivan passed away peacefully in his sleep in the care of Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care in Terre Haute IN, on Friday July 15, 2022. Bob was a valiant warrior against cancer for 11 years. He was born to John Maury Bowen and Mary Dennis Bowen in Salisbury, MD, on November 20, 1948.
Bob was extremely proud of the fact that he was the youngest Boy Scout in the state of VA, to become an Eagle Scout, achieving this honor at the age of 12. He graduated from Northampton High School in Eastville VA, where he excelled in football and track. After graduation he joined the army and became a Flight Instructor for helicopters. After being discharged from the Army, he enrolled at Virginia Tech and graduated with a degree in Engineering.
He came to Sullivan to supervise the building of the plant for Dougherty Brothers Company and was the Plant Manager. His career took him to several other Plants in MI and NJ. Moving back to Sullivan he started a business in Web Design. Bob enjoyed target shooting, golf, scuba diving and his pets.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister in-law Janet Soules, and in-laws Warren and Imogene Whitman.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Karen, a stepson Justin Toction, (Erin Cockrum), a daughter Meggan Conover and a son Bobby Bowen of NJ, a sister Virginia Oneil Lewis (Carl Lewis Jr.), of Cape Charles VA, brother in-law Randy Soules, of Terre Haute, nieces, Jennifer Slavinski (Mathew), of Virginia Beach, VA, Kimberly Gagliano (John Jr.), of Yorktown, VA, nephew Carl Lewis III (Ashleigh), of Seaford, VA, great niece Ashlee Bradford, great nephews Carl Lewis IV, and Alan Lewis.
Bob will be sadly missed by his dog Jewell, 7 cats, and 6 very friendly raccoons.
Bob’s wishes were not to have any public services.
