Obituary

Sara Sue Phegley Chowning passed away on May 02, 2023 in Moreno Valley, CA, formerly of Sullivan. Sara was born August 5,1933, to James and Jesse Phegley in Carlisle. She graduated from Purdue University and began what would become a long teaching career at Sullivan High School. She was active in 4H and was known as “The Pie Queen” to all who enjoyed her delicious pies. After retirement, she enjoyed playing bridge and bouche ball. She was active in her community and had many friends who miss her.

 

Sara married Philip Gene Chowning from Shelburn in 1954. They lived in Sullivan until moving to Southern California. Sara is survived by her two daughters Cinda and Cara. She was lovingly known as Grammy to her three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and friends of all ages. She is also survived by a sister Linda Phegley Howaneic of Terre Haute and two brothers Phil and Steve Phegley of Carlisle.

 

Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary’s church in Sullivan on August 11 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a reception at the church fellowship hall.
