Virgil Gerkin, 94, of Shelburn, passed away peacefully at his home with family by his side. He was born in Huron IN, on November 21, 1928 to Jonathan Gerkin and Della (Thomas) Gerkin. Virgil was a 1946 graduate of Huron High School and was a an honorably discharged veteran of the Army. He married the love of his life Peggy (Knight) Gerkin on September 2, 1951. He became a farmer who enjoyed gardening, playing softball, square dancing and roller skating. His membership was in the Kingsley United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Peggy.
Survivors include his daughters Linda (Russell) Bailey, Leeann (David) McHugh, his grandchildren Anne, Kasey, Patrick, Amber, Lauren, April, great grandchildren, Elzee, Denen, Ezra, several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday August 7, 2023, at Holmes Memorial Chapel with Pastor Steve Blades officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Carlilse. Military services will be given by the Sullivan County Honor Guard. The family would like to thank the Gentiva Hospice and Jennifer Russell for their excellent care in Virgil’s final days.
